Current and Upcoming Exhibitions
Fundament at Abmeyer + Wood, Seattle WA.
OCTOBER 31 - DECEMBER 2, 2017
In her oil paintings, Ray Mack uses formally conventional, erudite practices and themes present in the larger western canon to challenge the male-dominated canon they typically represent. Combining low-brow humor and unrelenting darkness with traditionally high-brow oil painting technique, compositional eye, and art historical references, Mack’s work invites the viewer to take a second look at culturally “neutral” images of race and gender discrimination. The works included in Fundament pull back the curtain of familiar scenes to direct our attention to the ugly internalized gender hierarchies hidden out of cultural view. Mack’s thoughtfully subversive work offers up a timely opportunity to reexamine “normal.”
Duo show with Sarah Sarchin at Bass & Reiner, San Francisco CA.
JANUARY 8 - FEBRUARY 23, 2018
In bringing together recent works by Seattle based artist Ray Mack and Los Angeles based artist Sarah Sarchin, this exhibition seeks to draw attention to current practices of reappropriation within contemporary figurative painting and examine how the same symbols can express drastically different meanings when borrowed across time.
